Kera
25 km from the port of Hersonissos, Kera is the last
mountainous village of the Municipality in an altitude of 680 m., in the
borders of the Lasithi mountain chain. It is organized in three districts,
within the green valley and water streams. Here you will find the historical monastery
of Kardiotissa (9th century), which is not only a historical
monument, but also a site of worship and legends and the center of the
revolutions of eastern Crete against its
invaders.
Proud like a crown, the Minoan altar "Karfi" of the post-Minoan period stands
over Kera. At the plateau of the village, visitors can take a rest and enjoy
the delicious traditional dishes, the wine and "tsikoudia" (or "raki") in the
taverns. The famous European natural path E4 also crosses from here. Another hiking
path connects Kera with the village
of Gonies, through the
gorge of "Roza". The European Long Distance Walking Path E4 crosses the area.
