Actions so far

The Mayor of Hersonissos, Mr Zacahrias Doxastakis signed the “Covenant of Mayors” adhesion form on the 18th April 2011, following authorization from the Hersonissos Municipality Board.  The Covenant of Mayors is an ambitious incentive of the European Commission that was established in order to mediate the effects of climatic changes through implementation of local sustainable energy policies (www.eumayors.eu).   

 

The actions that have been implemented so far are as follows:

 

Α) Public awareness and information dissemination, and in particular for those who are engaged in the tourist industry.  The Mayor of Hersonissos informed through a letter about the scopes and engagements following the adhesion to the “Covenant of Mayors” network.  The recipients of this letter were:

 

 

  • The Heraklion Hoteliers’ Association
  • The Entrepreneurs Association for Rented Rooms and Apartments “FILOXENIA”
  • The Hersonissos Commerce Association
  • The Guides’ Association of Crete and Thira &
  • The Association of Tourist Travel Bureaus’ in Crete

 

 

Β) The Mayor of Hersonissos, participated as a member of the Region of Crete delegate to a conference in Voroklini, Cyprus between 7th and 8th June.  The title of the conference was “Local and Regional Authorities towards adaptation to Climatic Change”.   The conference was organized by REGIOCLIMA (Regional Cooperation towards Adaptation to Climate Change).  Partners in REGIOCLIMA are:

  • Veneto Regional Authority, Italy
  • Fundacion Comunidad Valenciana Region Europea, Spain
  • University of Tartu, Esthonia
  • Bratislava Self-Governing Region, Slovakia
  • Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile urban communities, France
  • Region of Crete, Greece
  • Regional Agency for Entrepreneurship and Innovations, Varna, Bulgaria

 

The conference took place under the auspices of the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment and amongst others key note speakers were the Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment and the Interreg IVC Deputy Director.  The participant representatives of local and regional authorities had the chance to be updated on new facts relating to the climatic changes and the challenges that local authorities are called to face upon.
